Everest

An impossible challenge. A courageous rescue. A fascinating adventure to the highest point on the planet--the top of Mt. Everest. This challenge calls only to the most daring and determined of individuals, who are convinced that dreams can be realized through incredible effort and risk.

Join us for a true-life adventure film that will leave you breathless. See Everest, one of the most successful giant screen films ever made!

Everest is the story of an amazing mountaineering achievement, taking audiences on an inspirational and spell-binding ascent with an international team of climbers who found hope, beauty and triumph in the wake of tragedy.

The Wells Fargo CineDome's 60-foot domed screen and super realistic 70-millimeter film will place audiences in the midst of this perilous journey to the top of the world. With its six channel, 24 speaker digital surround sound system, the CineDome will make audiences feel like they're on the mountain, braving the furious winds and gasping in the thin, high-altitude air.

Narrated by actor Liam Neeson, Everest is the first large-format film ever to become one of the top 10 highest grossing films in North America. Everest features the first large-format images ever brought back from Mt. Everest. The film is a community project of Wells Fargo.

The movie tells the dramatic true story of the Everest expedition’s journey to the summit, just days after the infamous 1996 tragedy in which eight climbers lost their lives in a deadly storm. Over creaking ice falls, across quaking chasms, up dangerous, towering cliffs, and into the mystical "death zone" of oxygen-thin altitude, the camera team maintained the spirit of determination, optimism and camaraderie that led to miraculous achievements as they conquered the 29,028 foot mountain.

The team's accomplishment was all the more remarkable because they carried a 35-pound large-format movie camera and several rolls of film to the summit.

As they approached the dramatic climax of their climb, the Everest team of climbers-- David Breashears, Ed Viesturs, Araceli Segarra, Sumiyo Tsuzuki and Jamling Tenzing Norgay (the son of Tenzing Norgay, who made the historic first ascent of the mountain with Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953) felt the effects of altitude more and more, and saw other teams show evidence of dangerous mountain sickness. Mt. Everest towers five and a half miles above sea level and simply staying alive there requires immense endurance and courage.

Few men could have been better suited for the job of directing this unprecedented effort than David Breashears. Breashears is both an accomplished mountaineer and an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. In 1985, he became the first American ever to reach the summit of Mt. Everest twice.

He has participated in nine filming expeditions on three sides of the mountain. Breashears knew, for example, that to capture the mountain's many faces requires a daring sense of imagination -- a willingness to plunge cameras deep into gorges and down the abyss of ice chasms.

During the production of Everest, Ed Viesturs summited Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. It was his fourth summit of the mountain. Viesturs was also a vital part of the rescue effort to help critically injured climbers during the May 10th tragedy. Viesturs is currently on a quest to climb all 14 of the world's highest mountains (above 8,000 meters) without the use of supplemental oxygen. He has successfully climbed ten to date.
