Washington Pavilion's Community Engagement and Learning Department offers something for everybody, with classes offered year round for toddlers through adults, outreach and more.  

Summer Classes and Camps go onsale March 1, check the document below to get a feel for what's coming, and watch for the class brochure at the end of February.

Until then, many classes in our Fall/Spring 2007-2008 catalogue are still taking registrations.

Under-Water-Color Sea Turtles, ages 7 and up
Create an 18” x 24” watercolor and mixed media painting of a sea turtle. Learn watercolor technique of wash, wet on wet, salt, tape and resist. These pieces will be gorgeous and ready to frame! Rita Stoel, Rogers Classroom

Clay Fountain, ages 8 to adult   
Create a beautiful, bubbling water fountain for your viewing and listening enjoyment. Use clay and glaze to make an indoor fountain of your own unique design. The cost of the fountain motor is an extra $15, payable in class. Rita Stoel, Rogers Classroom

Dino Fun, ages 3 ½ –

My Pop-Up Me Book, ages 3 – 6     
Make an original hands-on book using mixed media and create fun action pages that promote healthy habits. Project pages include three-dimensional “toothpaste”, glow-in-the-dark stars, fabric quilts, pop up hands and scratch-and-sniff fruit! Alison Wurgller, Carver Classroom

Toddler Art Two, ages 20 months – 3 years, with an adult  
The second in our popular series for Toddler Art graduates, or any toddler with an adult. Experiment with clay, paint, printing, gluing and drawing. Create keepsakes like Circle Art and Clay Texture Tile in this fun, process-oriented class. Lisa Vande Vegte, Carver Classroom

Kids Mix: Rainbow Fish

Arthur’s Toothfairy Boxes,* ages 5 – 8    
What will you do when you lose a tooth? Put it in your very own clay tooth fairy box! Learn how to make a round box with a lid, using a shiny colorful glaze. Projects will be fired after class and must be picked up within 2 weeks. Rita Stoel, Rogers Classroom

Clay Lizards, Turtles and Frogs, ages 6 – 8      
Visit the critters in the Kirby Science Discovery Center and sketch their portraits, then head to the clay studio to create these reptiles by sculpting with clay and glazes! Rita Stoel, Rogers Classroom

Afterschool Art, ages 6 – 9                            
Learn new art skills and explore your creativity with clay sculpture, pencil drawing, pen and inks, tempera and watercolor paintings, plaster casts, art history and more. Each Afterschool Art season offers new subjects and projects. Rita Stoel, Carver Classroom

Kids on the Wheel, ages 9 – 15                                                         
Play and learn on the potter’s wheel. Learn basic wheel technique and hand-building methods. Students rotate through one of 3 pottery wheels. Only six spots are available in each session. Students must wear shoes with backs. Rita Stoel, Rogers Classroom

Fantasy Figures, ages 9 – 15

The Walk-In Living Sea
, ages 7 – 11  
Create an underwater world that fits in a giant plastic bubble big enough to walk in! Make glow in the dark sea animals, fancy and friendly fish, and textured plant life. Class will also attend the CindeDome film The Living Sea. Families are invited to visit our own “living sea” on the last day of class. Molly Wilson/Allison Wurgler, Carver Classroom

ClayMation
, ages 8 – 11  
Ever wonder how they make claymation movies? It’s animated clay! Draw your own cartoon character, sculpt characters from oil-based clay, paint a set, and “film” a short movie using a digital camera (provided?). Take home your cartoon character and a flipbook movie made by you! Molly Wilson, Carver Classroom

Film School
, ages 10 ½ – 13 and ages 14 – 18                                                           
Make a mini-movie! Write a short ‘screenplay’, learn film-making basics, prepare your storyboard and film it. Students are required to have their own video or digital recorder. Some out of class work will be necessary. Show your movie on the last day of class in the Belbas Theatre! Beginners Private Wheel Throwing - Clay Class
Learn the techniques of throwing and creating basic forms. Receive one-on-one instruction and spend ample time practicing on either the electric or kick wheel. Only three spots are available in each session. All supplies, glazes and firing included. Marlene Slothouber, Rogers Classroom

Cooking Classes
Great recipes and great fun! Choose from a variety of classes such as “Cooking for Two”, “Delicious Desserts”, or “Holiday Hors D’oeuvres”. Get a group of friends or coworkers together and pump up your skills in the kitchen with helpful tips and inside secrets. A typical class runs from two to three hours and is perfect for up to 10 guests.
