Emperor, Incorporated

Children's Theatre Co. of Sioux Falls' Emperor, Incorporated
January 22, 2005, 1 p.m.
Tickets: $12 child, $18 adult
www.ctcsf.org

On the eve of her 13th birthday, Pretty May Peror runs away from home, only to discover that, unbeknownst to her father, his corporation is destroying the city of Glitterland. Emperor, Incorporated, an exciting new musical inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes, revisits the classic themes of the original story through a contemporary lens. Set in a futuristic world pervaded by technology and ruled by consumerism, this new play for family audiences, like Andersen's tale, explores the humorous – and sometimes dangerous – delusions that grow from a life out of balance and a heart overtaken by greed.

Produced by the Children's Theatre Company of Sioux Falls, Emperor, Incorporated is the first locally produced play to be included in the Washington Pavilion’s Performance Series. Recently, the production received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in the Musical Theater category in the area of "Artistic Creativity and Preservation”—a first for South Dakota.

The production was conceived by local resident Nancy Halverson, executive director of the Children's Theatre Company of Sioux Falls. Halverson will serve as the director and producer.

Additional contributors are active in children's theatre on a national level. American Alliance for Theatre and Education award winner Michael Keck composed the music and collaborated with Wesley Middleton on the lyrics. Middleton, whose children's plays Tomato Plant Girl and Degas' Little Dancer have been produced by theatre groups across the nation, is the playwright. The set was designed by Jim Kronzer, who has served as a scenic designer for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and costumes were designed by Steven Howard and Bob Miller, who have earned a combined total of nine Emmy Awards for their work in television.

Recommended for ages eight and older, and their families. A sign language interpreter will be at this performance.

The Children's Theatre Company of Sioux Falls was recently invited to include Emperor, Incorporated at the 2004 Seattle Fringe Act Festival and the World Festival in Denmark – two great accolades for this local company. Don't miss this world-premiere family musical!
