Experience the excitement of flight simulators, Mars exploration and science fiction. The first thing visitors notice is the Hover Race, and that’s just the beginning...
Hover Race
Hover Race is a highly interactive and entertaining exhibit that features a virtual hovercraft race. The exhibit challenges guests to weave the craft through the virtual planetary maze to retrieve hidden energy sources within a specified time period. The virtual maze is projected on to a spherical platform that tilts enabling the operator to steer the hovercraft through the maze. The “tilty table” can be operated by one person, or more, which adds to the challenge.
Virtual Hang Glider
If you’re all about reward versus risk, then the Virtual Hang Glider is for you. Visitors will be able to experience the thrill of maneuvering a hang glider without having to actually launch themselves off of a cliff. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology similar to that found in flight training simulators, “pilots” can feel the freedom of the closest thing to having wings. This exhibit is sponsored by SDN Communications.
Mars Rover
Think you’ve got what it takes to be a NASA scientist? How about a NASA scientist who is responsible for controlling a multi-million-dollar rover on a planet 100 million miles away? The new Mars Rover exhibit gives you the chance to control a model rover on a simulated Mars surface, just like the ones currently exploring the Red Planet. A television camera aboard the rover sends back pictures to a computer screen. Keep in mind, scientists can’t operate the rovers in real time because radio signals can take 20 minutes to reach because Mars, so the simulation here stays true to that challenge as well. You’ll have to plan and transmit a sequence of commands to the rover, which it will then execute them. Adults will love this exhibit as much as the kids. This exhibit is sponsored by Augustana College.
Space Travel in Science Fiction
So you’ve raced and roved and glided. Now maybe you’d just like a moment to catch your breath as you take a look at space travel as portrayed in some of the best science fiction movies and TV series of all time. The Space Travel in Science Fiction exhibit lets guests choose and view dozens of film clips from classic science fiction movies related to space travel. From Flash Gordon to the Star Wars, sit back and enjoy some of the scenes that inspired many a modern day astronaut or NASA engineer.
Build a Space Base
Younger kids love this hands-on exhibit that allows them to create and play with an exploration base on the moon or Mars. Toddlers and pre-schoolers have an out-of-this-world adventure with a special play set that includes astronauts, space vehicles and a space base. This creative exhibit sparksthe imagination in our youngest visitors.
Space Shuttle
A long-time favorite exhibit, the “Fly the Shuttle” simulator was recently updated with new software offering a host of new challenges. Shuttle pilots attempt landings at different locations, and even try risky night landings. And if you think you’ve got the landing part down, try your hand at piloting the shuttle to a successful docking link-up with the International Space Station.
Hot Air Balloon
Learn the basics of what makes a hot air balloon rise (hint: could it be the hot air?). This balloon features a design courtesy of Aerostar International Inc.
Space Suit
An actual space suit featues a mural background--you can look like you're taking a space walk. A great photo op awaits, so don’t forget your camera.
