In My Lifetime: Illustrations by Tony Fleecs

In My Lifetime, comic book cover, 2006 This exhibit is on display in the Visual Arts Center's Gallery F from October 13, 2006 through January 14, 2007.

Referring to Tony Fleecs as a local comic book artist is a bit misleading. Fleecs was a Sioux Falls resident up until very recently, when he moved to Los Angeles, California. While living and working in Sioux Falls, Fleecs was a graphic designer for KELO TV. He graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, Colorado.

In My Lifetime is also the name of Fleecs' recently released and first comic book published by Silent Devil Comics. It is a semi-autobiographical adult comic book in the tradition of the underground comics of the 1960s. Recently, the comic book genre and, specifically, adult comics have seen a renewed popularity, and many have inspired recent major motion pictures.

Fleecs’ comic book deals with his real and fictitious life as a comic illustrator living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The comic includes scenes that may be recognizable to residents of this city. It should be noted that much of Fleecs' work is of a mature nature.

Fleecs' highly stylized artwork has also been featured in local publications, event posters in the Twin Cities and Sioux Falls and on various local television programs. This exhibit consists of many of Fleecs' works shown in stages from sketch board to computer manipulation to finished product. Fleecs begins with his handmade ink drawings on paper and then scans them and digitally modifies those images with his computer. This unusual exhibition offers gallery visitors the opportunity to compare the drawings side by side with the finished printed imagery. While edgy and provocative, In My Lifetime: Illustrations by Tony Fleecs also proves to be educational.
