Alumni Hall
Background When Washington High School closed its location at 11th and Main in 1992, the Alumni Association preserved school memorabilia, which is now on display in the Alumni Hall on the 3rd floor west wing at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science. After the opening of the Washington Pavilion in June 1999 the Washington High School Historic Committee was formed comprised of alumni and former teachers. Their mission is to preserve and foster an appreciation of the building that was Washington High School for nearly a century, and to make visitors and future generations aware of the contributions made by many graduates and teachers through the schools long and distinguished history.
Trophy Cases The original Washington High School trophy cases in Alumni Hall contain a historical display of the school dating from 1895 through 1992. Memorabilia includes state trophies, an 1895 commencement program, a 1910 annual, a copy of a letter from Susan B. Anthony addressed to the Sioux Falls Lyre editors in 1895, drama programs, band and chorus photos, dance programs, cheerleading and wrestling outfits, athletic sweaters, band uniforms, orchestra jackets, and countless other pieces that weave a chronicle of the school’s history.
Memorabilia throughout the Washington Pavilion In the main lobby of the Washington Pavilion, brass-plated grates adorn the side windows of the box office. These were the original “windows” for the ticket offices of Washington High School, located at the east auditorium entrance and at the west gymnasium entrance. Another piece of history preserved is the original marble staircases within the 1922 building – now the Kirby Science Discovery Center. When alumni return for the first time, the stairway is often the first familiar thing they see. The former school library is now home to the beautiful Everist Gallery in the Pavilion’s Visual Arts Center. The windows are the same design as the 1906 originals. The library’s mezzanine (study balcony) was removed to open space for large exhibits. The Dakota Avenue foyer, built in 1935, still looks the same with its marble walls and white ceiling cornices. On the building’s exterior, the roof balustrade and den tiled cornices are easily recognized from the distance. The History Old Central School opened on the site of the former Washington High School in 1879, ten years before South Dakota became a state. In 1906, construction began on a north wing. In 1908, the new building opened, and the school board formally adopted the name Washington High School. In 1922, a south wing was completed. In 1933-34, Old Central School was razed, and the rest of the high school was completed in 1936. In its eight decades of existence, 32,000 students walked through the high school’s doors; in some families, multiple generations received their diplomas from the school. The Neoclassical structure is an architectural landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
