NASA Educator Resource Center

The Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science features the region's only NASA Educator Resource Center, an on-site multi-media library for K-12 educators.

The NASA Educator Resource Center offers free educational products and materials for teachers of all academic levels. Teachers can enhance their existing curriculum by using these classroom-tested materials. Although NASA educational materials relate primarily to science, math and technology, they can be valuable supplements for all subjects.

Through the NASA Educator Resource Center Network (ERCN), NASA provides expertise and facilities to help educators assess and utilize science, mathematics, and technology instructional projects aligned with national standards and appropriate state frameworks and based on NASA's unique mission and results. ERCs partner with local, state, and regional educational organizations to become part of the systemic education reform initiatives in the state.

The ERCN provides educators with demonstrations of educational technologies such as NASA Spacelink, NASA Television, and the NASA Education Home Page. ERCs also provide inservice and preservice training utilizing instructional products. Educators have the opportunity to preview, copy, and/or receive NASA instructional products.

The Washington Pavilion NASA Educator Resource Center is operated in cooperation with the NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.

The materials are sent directly from NASA and include:

Free Teacher's Guides providing lesson plans and entire units on such space-related subjects as meteorites, living and working in space, rocketry, planetary geology, and lunar exploration. These guides also include easy to use student activities and experiments that are valuable classroom learning tools.

Approximately 300 quality video programs covering topics ranging from the history of space travel and space exploration to aeronautics, earth science, and space careers. Any of these informative videos can be duplicated at your request and used to enhance your educational units already in place or as a starting point in developing new ones. We only require that you supply the blank VHS tapes.

Free full color NASA posters with information about the International Space Station, microgravity, solar system geology, the sun, and other topics.

Free bookmarks, lithographs, science magazines, and CD-ROMS which provide information on microgravitiy, remote sensing, aeronautics, oceanography, and much more.

A desktop computer which allows you to view the available CD-ROMS as well as to access NASA’s web sites and other space-related sites.

A NASA resource catalog. If you are unable to find what you are looking for at our ERC, you may find it in this publication. Let us know what you need, and we will request it at no cost to you.

Our ERC is located in the Egger Arts and Science Library in the Washington Pavilion. Our center is only one of two in the state of South Dakota and offers a unique opportunity for educators in this area.

If you would like more information on the NASA Educators Resource Center, call 367-7397 Ext. 2350 or click here to e-mail us. Access to the library is by appointment only.
