Dale Lamphere: New Work/Natural Element
Everist Gallery, Sept. 26, 2008 - Jan. 11, 2009
Clovis Point, Stainless Stell, Stone, 2008
Dale Lamphere has evolved into one of South Dakota’s most accomplished and best known sculptors. Lamphere maintains a studio in Sturgis, in the Black Hills. He exhibits his artwork across the Midwest and throughout the country. Although Lamphere is essentially a self-taught artist, he has taught sculpture at Black Hills State University as well as at schools and sculptural workshops. Lamphere’s artwork references historical sculptural traditions as well as contemporary modernism. The focus of this exhibition is upon his most recent work in welded stainless steel, although some representational works in bronze are also included. Many of his stainless steel sculptures are mixed media, incorporating elements of stone or a variety of metals. Lamphere’s sculptures relate to the South Dakota landscape. They reflect the earth, sky, and water, and offer us insight into this artist’s unique vision of the natural world around us.
