David Mercer is a pianist and composer living Sioux Falls, South Dakota with his wife and two daughters. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota and began piano lessons at the age of 11. Very quickly he became enamored with the music of Beethoven, Chopin and Rachmaninoff and went on to perform in competitions in High School under the guidance of Dr. Paul Wirth. After graduating with a bachelor of arts in music from the University of Minnesota in 2007 he performed and composed for pop, rock and jazz ensembles. He has written scores for television and film, and composed for orchestral and vocal ensembles, and recently scored the music for the feature length film “Honky Kong” written and directed by Stephen Gurewitz, which premiered this July at Cinema Village in New York. This year will also mark the release of his 24 piano waltzes and his psych-prog-rock album Merry Martial in the fall.
In November he will perform the 24 Waltzes at the Belbas Theater in Sioux Falls. This work is his most ambitious and daunting to date, clocking in at over an hour and a half. Mercer has developed a harmonic language which is highly chromatic, neo-romantic, modern; juxtaposing elements of cinematic soundscapes, jarring dissonances, lush pianistic textures, and haunting melodies. The pieces were all written during the quarantine, during which he and his wife had just brought home a newborn baby - the mood of the pieces shifts quickly from innocence, to dissonance, to beauty, to fear, to quiet reflection, and at times to unwavering anxiety and paranoia.
The show is suitable for ages 12 and up.
