SFJB presents: JANE MONHEIT featuring Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, and Rick Montalbano
April 26, 2019 | 8 p.m.
Jane Monheit burst onto the jazz scene in the late 1990’s and has never looked back! At the young age of 20, Jane became first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute’s vocal competition and soon after she had released her first album. A true jazz singer, Jane’s voice sounds smooth and delicate at times, but earthy and busting at others.
Jane Monheit was raised in Oakdale, New York, on Long Island’s South Shore and still makes New York her home with husband and drummer Rick Montalbano. Her latest album is a tribute to songs of Ella Fitzgerald and her repertoire is steeped in the Great American Songbook. Jane has followed the careers of many of the great singers of the last 100 years.
When she talks about her influences she names some of those legends, “Certainly Ella (Fitzgerald), certainly Judy (Garland)—those are the two major, major ones. Probably Sarah (Vaughan) as well. Maybe Bernadette (Peters) too, because I do tend to sing with my heart on my sleeve, and I learned a lot of that listening to her.”
You can hear some of the greatest songs written when Jane takes the stage. And she’s just a step away from being a legend too.
