The Art Walls, managed by the Washington Pavilion in partnership with the 300 Building and other community partners, serve as a dynamic space for artists to showcase their creativity in a public setting. As artists ourselves, we recognize that the creative process is unique to each individual, and we strive to support art initiatives through a structured and accessible application process. These walls will feature unique works of art, personal expressions and reflections on community and global issues. As a living wall, the artwork will change over time, providing a dynamic and evolving cultural experience in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls.

Artist Permitting Process

To ensure a vibrant and respectful public art space, all artists must obtain a permit before painting. Permits are site-specific and granted for designated areas only. Artists of all ages are available to apply for a permit, but those under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian with them during the painting process. Please follow the steps below to apply for a permit:

How to Participate

Step 1: Request Permit

Artists must request permission from the Art Walls Approval Committee to paint on the designated public art wall(s) in downtown Sioux Falls. Artists should come prepared with a detailed project idea when applying for their permit.

Step 2: Authorization From Art Walls Approval Committee

Once an artist’s proposal is reviewed and selected by the committee, a permit will be issued for the project. This form must be signed by the building owner and provided to the artist before they can proceed.

Step 3: Identification and Documentation

Artists must present a valid form of identification, which includes a driver’s license, student ID, or government-issued ID, when applying for the permit. They will also be required to sign a Liability and Release Form and acknowledge the Art Wall policies.

Step 4: Permit Issuance

Following verification, a permit will be issued that includes:

·The artist’s name
·Approved location
·Start dates
·Authorization signature from the facilitator

Artists must always keep this permit on hand while painting. Permits will be available for pick up at the Washington Pavilion Box Office during business hours.

Art Wall Policies

Permits are required for all artwork. If multiple artists are working on a piece, each must have a permit. School and group projects require a group permit.

Painting is only allowed in designated areas

Painting is only allowed in designated areas as specified on the permit. Unauthorized painting outside of these areas is strictly prohibited.

Respect private and public property

Respect private and public property. The walls are on private property. Artists must clean up after their work and properly dispose of all materials off-site. Any damage to property may result in fines.

Access Restrictions

Climbing on any structures or barriers is prohibited to prevent damage. Artists are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the space.

Content Guidelines

All artistic expressions must be appropriate for all ages. Profane, obscene or offensive imagery or language is not permitted.

Be mindful of your surroundings

The Art Walls are busy with activity. Avoid painting near parked cars and prevent overspray from damaging vehicles or buildings. Artists are responsible for any damage.

You are an ambassador

When painting in this space, you represent the spirit of our city and the broader artistic community. Treat building and business owners, as well as the public, with respect and courtesy.

Painting on this wall is entirely voluntary. All participants do so at their own risk. The organizers, property owners, sponsors and affiliates are not responsible for any injuries, accidents, damage or losses that may occur during participation
